Scholarships, Fellowships, and Grants

The Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society supports the growth and leadership of current and prospective women orthopaedic professionals through education, mentoring, research, and outreach. RJOS also promotes and advances musculoskeletal health and science. Scholarships, Fellowships, and Grants are offered to all members of RJOS in good standing.

The RJOS 2026 application period for Scholarships, Fellowships, and Grants is now open!

All applications are due by September 15, 2025. New membership applications must be received by August 31, 2025, to be eligible.

2026 RJOS Scholarships, Fellowships, and Grants

RJOS/Zimmer Biomet Clinical & Basic Science Research Grant
INTRODUCTION
The Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS), with generous support from Zimmer Biomet, is pleased to offer the RJOS/Zimmer Biomet Clinical and Basic Science Research Grant. This grant is intended to support innovative and impactful research in orthopaedic surgery, with a preference for projects that address women’s musculoskeletal health issues.

This grant is designed to support early-stage or pilot research projects with strong potential to secure future funding, while advancing clinical or basic science knowledge in orthopaedic surgery. It also aims to promote the inclusion of women and other underrepresented groups in musculoskeletal research, and to foster meaningful collaborations across disciplines that drive innovation and broaden the impact of the work.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To apply, you must:
  • Be an Active or Candidate Member of RJOS in good standing
  • Be a Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Orthopaedic Surgeon
  • Provide an NPI Number for compliance with the Physician Payment Sunshine Act
  • Be affiliated with a U.S.-based institution

RECIPIENT RESPONSIBILITIES
The selected grant recipient must:
  • Confirm acceptance of the award upon notification and submit a signed W-9 (for U.S. residents) or W-8 (for non-U.S. residents).
  • Sign a formal agreement acknowledging the terms of the grant, including a commitment to maintain active RJOS membership for an additional five years and to give back to the organization by volunteering in some capacity (e.g., committee service, mentorship, or event support) during that period.
  • Attend the RJOS Annual Meeting and Business Meeting in New Orleans, LA on Monday, March 2, 2026.
  • Attend and present a poster at the RJOS Research Symposium on March 2, 2026, which is scheduled immediately prior to the RJOS Annual Meeting.
  • Submit a Final Research Report and Final Budget by July 1, 2027.
  • Acknowledge RJOS and Zimmer Biomet in all publications and presentations.
  • Promptly notify RJOS and provide copies of any publications, presentations, or subsequent funding that arise from or are related to this project.

RJOS Alexandra Kirkley, MD Academic Traveling Fellowship

The Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) is dedicated to supporting the advancement and leadership of women in orthopaedic surgery through education, mentoring, research, and outreach. As part of our mission to promote excellence in musculoskeletal health and science, RJOS is proud to offer the 2026 Alexandra Kirkley, MD Academic Traveling Fellowship, made possible through the generous support of Zimmer Biomet.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To apply, you must:
  • Be a current RJOS Active, Candidate, or Fellow Member in good standing.
  • Not have previously received an RJOS Academic Traveling Fellowship.

RECIPIENT RESPONSIBILITIES
The selected fellowship recipient must:
  • Confirm acceptance of the award upon notification and submit a signed W-9 (for U.S. residents) or W-8 (for non-U.S. residents).
  • Sign a formal agreement acknowledging the terms of the fellowship, including a commitment to maintain active RJOS membership throughout their training and into their years of practice, and a willingness to give back to the organization by volunteering their time in some capacity (e.g. committee service, mentorship, or event support) as they progress in their orthopaedic career.
  • Attend the RJOS Annual Meeting and Business Meeting in New Orleans, LA on Monday, March 2, 2026.
  • Be encouraged to attend the RJOS Research Symposium, which is scheduled immediately prior to the RJOS Annual Meeting.
  • Complete all travel by June 30, 2026, and submit the reimbursement form and final receipts by July 15, 2026.
  • Submit a written summary of their experience for publication in one of RJOS's monthly spotlight e-blasts and/or on the RJOS website
  • Give a 5-minute presentation about the fellowship experience at the 2027 RJOS Annual Meeting.

Grace Marlene DeMaio Memorial Medical Student Scholarship

This scholarship provides one deserving medical student with the opportunity to attend the RJOS Annual Meeting.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To apply, you must:
  • Be a current RJOS Student Member in good standing and actively enrolled in an accredited medical school.
  • Be a current resident of, or originally from, the state of New Jersey
  • Not have previously received any RJOS medical student scholarship (students may only receive one during their time in medical school).

  • Be a current RJOS Resident Member in good standing and actively enrolled in an accredited orthopaedic surgical residency program.
  • Not have previously received any RJOS Resident scholarship or grant (residents may only receive one during their time in residency).
  • Be the primary investigator of the research.

Julie and Quincy Samora Medical Student Scholarship

INTRODUCTION
The Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) is proud to offer the 2026 Julie and Quincy Samora Medical Student Scholarship, made possible through the exclusive generosity of Dr. Julie Samora and Dr. Quincy Samora. This scholarship supports one RJOS medical student in attending the RJOS and AAOS Annual Meetings, providing meaningful exposure to the field of orthopaedic surgery, professional development, and mentorship opportunities.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To apply, you must:
  • Be a current RJOS Student Member in good standing and actively enrolled in an accredited medical school.
  • Not have previously received any RJOS medical student scholarship (students may only receive one during their time in medical school).
  • Have completed and passed both USMLE STEP 1 and 2 CK Exams

The Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS), in partnership with The Perry Initiative, shares a commitment to advancing gender diversity in orthopaedic surgery. RJOS supports women throughout all stages of their careers—from pre-medical students to practicing orthopaedic surgeons—through mentorship, education, research, and professional development. The Perry Initiative promotes early exposure and interest in the field by offering hands-on career exploration workshops for high school and medical students.
