Physician Wellness Webinar Series

Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) is pleased to be collaborating with The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) and the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society (JRGOS) on a Physician Wellness Webinar Series.

The recording of this first webinar in the series “Mentoring in a Diverse Workforce” is now availalbe.  This webinar was moderated by Christen M. Russo, MD with MaCulus V. Hogan, MD and Erica Taylor, MD serving as faculty.

Webinar Description: Diversity encourages stronger leadership and better all-around performance, yet it is well-known that orthopaedic surgery lacks diversity. To promote a diverse workplace, mentoring must occur from the bottom up – by increasing early exposure to women and minority students at the high school and college level – and from the top down – by engaging our peers and faculty to set and continuously re-evaluate goals at the leadership level.

In this webinar, faculty from the AOFAS, RJOS, and JRGOS discussed how orthopaedic surgeons can facilitate diversity in the specialty, and ultimately elevate patient care and engagement in the community.

The recording of the second webinar in the series, "Physician Work/Life Balance: Avoiding Burnout" is now also available. This webinar was moderated by Sandra E. Klein, MD with Marlene DeMaio, MD and Karen M. Sutton, MD serving as faculty.

Webinar Description: Burnout is a systemic problem within all healthcare professionals but is particularly prevalent with physicians. Multiple factors play a part in contributing to a high rate of discontentment, which can have negative consequences for the physician's health, the overall patient care, and the positive work/life balance for the individual. Faculty from the AOFAS, Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society, and J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society will discuss factors contributing to physician burnout, provide examples on how to identify consequences of burnout, discuss how to distinguish burnout from other more serious medical conditions, including behavioral and mental health, and present strategies for achieving work/life balance at all stages of your career.

The recording of the third webinar in the series, "Outreach and Giving Back: How Volunteerism Leads to Happiness and Fulfilment", is now available. This webinar was moderated by J. Turner Vossller, MD with Pierce E. Scranton, MD, Ruth L. Thomas, MD, Naomi N. Shields, MD, Eric C. Gokcen, MD, Steven F. Conti, MD and Matthew S. Conti, MD serving as faculty.

Webinar Description: Through the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Foundation Overseas Outreach Projects, AOFAS members have the opportunity to use their surgical expertise to help children and adults in underserved areas. Surgeons volunteer time and pay for their own travel, and the Foundation covers in-country expenses for food, lodging, travel, and logistics support. The Foundation currently sponsors outreach trips to Vietnam and Kenya with plans to expand to new sites in the future.

In part three of the Physician Wellness Series, faculty discuss the powerful impact of this humanitarian work, not just on the patients, but also on the physicians who contribute their time and talents. The panel discusses how their unique experiences in volunteer programs and missions have positively affected their careers and their overall well-being.
