RJOS Traveling Fellowships
Two RJOS Traveling Fellowships are awarded to RJOS members each year, an Academic Fellowship and a Practice Enrichment Fellowship. The Academic Fellowship, recently named in memory of Alexandra Kirkley, MD, provides funds to allow the winning applicant to travel in order to enrich his/her academic career. The Practice Enrichment Fellowship allows the winner to travel in order to learn new techniques or expand his/her sub-specialty interests. Applicants must be RJOS members in good standing who are Board Certified or Board Eligible orthopaedic surgeons and citizens of the US or Canada. The awards are up to $6000 travel expense reimbursement for each fellowship, and fellows are expected to give a presentation on their fellowship experience at the RJOS Annual Luncheon at the AAOS Annual Meeting. Application deadline date is October 1st. Applications completed after this date will not be reviewed until the following year.

RJOS Medical Student Scholarship
In order to encourage students to enter the field of orthopaedic surgery, RJOS provides up to $1500 each to two medical students to attend the AAOS Annual Meeting, including the RJOS Annual Luncheon. Applicants should be current medical students. Application deadline date is October 1st. Applications completed after this date will not be reviewed until the following year.

RJOS/Zimmer Grants
Zimmer, Inc., has generously provided funding for 2 (two) separate $30,000 grant awards targeted to RJOS members. There is no age restriction, but the applicants should be Board eligible or Board certified. The grant application can be on any topic, but preference will be given to topics related to women's musculoskeletal health issues. Winners will be announced at the 2010 AAOS Annual Meeting during the RJOS Luncheon. The application deadline date is October 1st. Applications completed after this date will not be reviewed until the following year.

With support from DePuy Orthopaedics, this Award will help train and develop female orthopaedic surgeons to improve knowledge in the area of women’s musculoskeletal health, and enhance the understanding of gender and diversity differences in the outcomes of orthopaedic procedures. The candidate must be a female orthopaedic surgeon who is a member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society. The amount of the award is $50,000 for up to one year. The application deadline for 2010 funding is December 1, 2009.

The OREF Research Grants Board has extended the deadline for the Career Development Award in Total Joint and Trauma Surgery to November 16, 2009. This one-year grant provides up to $50,000 to advance the training of the next generation of orthopedists who have a clinical or scientific interest in total joint surgery and/or trauma treatment. Physicians currently completing formal orthopaedic surgical training, currently enrolled in advanced surgical training, or having completed formal training within the last four (4) years may apply by submitting a proposal for an individual plan for further research investigation or surgical training. (This requirement is flexible if a sabbatical or leave of absence was taken during the candidate’s early career and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.)
