RJOS Courage Award
The definition of courage is “the ability to do something that frightens one” and “strength in the face of pain or grief” (Oxford Languages dictionary, Oxford University Press, 2020.) Courage is a conscious choice and willingness to confront a difficult situation. As orthopaedic surgeons, at some point we may become aware of or may be the victim of unethical practices. This may be regarding patient care, billing practices, or treatment of medical students, residents, staff, or colleagues. What is witnessed may become too hard to ignore and someone takes that risk to address the wrongdoing. That takes courage. It is inspirational and sometimes comes at a great cost.
The nominee should be an orthopaedic surgeon who defines courage and conviction in representing what is right to protect and help others and who stood up for what was right in the face of difficulty or at a risk to their career.
